Pincher Creek & Waterton 2026 – Flowers and Trees

My, what has become, annual trip to Pincher Creek and Waterton Lakes National Park in late May usually finds an abundance of wildflowers blooming. This year the results were somewhat mixed. In several areas around Pincher Creek that I typically visit, it seems the season was late as there weren’t a lot of flowers blooming. Waterton NP, on the other hand, seemed to have lots of blooms although maybe not quite as prolific as in previous years.

One wildflower that always seems present throughout this area is the Arrowleaf Balsamroot. I have featured its golden blossoms in previous posts. I thought that, in this post, I would feature a small gallery of this plant.

One wildflower that I found in Castle Mountain Provincial Park that I photographed is Prairie Smoke. Apparently it gets its name from wispy plumes when it goes to seed.

The wildflowers in the following gallery came from Waterton Lakes Provincial Park. I have tried to identify them as best I can. If you click on an image, a larger version will open up with the flower’s name in the caption. I am by no means a wildflower expert so if any reader finds any that I have mislabeled, please leave a comment. There is one flower that I could not identify so I just labeled it “Reaching for the Sky”. Another photo is not of flowers, just some bright red leaves that caught my attention.

As mentioned in a prior post, Waterton was hit by a wildfire about 7 or 8 years ago that destroyed a large portion of the park. Fortunately, the townsite was saved. As devastating as the fire was, the regrowth of the vegetation is significant with each succeeding year. Many will look at a burnt out forest and just see the ugliness of the destruction. I see the beauty of nature’s regeneration. I see hope. I see regrowth. I see positive changes every year. In particular, I love the contrast of bright green new growth against blackened trees. Hopefully my images capture the beauty that I see in this park. For sure, you want to click on the thumbnails below to open the full image.
