Arran was the largest of the “ABC” islands we visited in Scotland last Fall. The ferry ride was longer than for the other two islands, this time departing from Ardrossan on the mainland. The Isle of Arran is known as “Scotland in Miniature” and it is easy to see why. With beautiful highlands and lowlands, picturesque villages, waterfalls, two distilleries, castles, great food and cozy pubs, it really offers little tastes of all that Scotland has to offer. We spent several days driving around and exploring this wonderful island.

Just a few miles north of Broddick, where the ferry comes in, is the picturesque village of Corrie. With its white cottages and red sandstone shoreline, it is a beautiful stop on a drive around the island.

As you continue to drive north you pass beautiful vistas of hills and waterfalls.

At the north end of the island is the village of Lochranza and Lochranza Castle. The castle dates to the late 1200’s or early 1300’s. It was originally two stories, with the lord inhabiting the second floor and storage on the main floor.

Nearby is Lochranza Distillery. Arran Whisky is available at home so I have had the pleasure of enjoying several of their offerings before we came on this trip. Being somewhat familiar with their products, it was fun going on a tour of the distillery.

As mentioned above, Broddick is where the ferry terminal for Arran is located. It is also the main village on the island with numerous shops and restaurants. On its outskirts lies Broddick Castle. The castle dates back several centuries and was strategically located at the mouth of the Firth of Clyde. It was the ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton. Broddick Castle is well worth a visit.

The south end of Arran is more reminiscent of the lowland areas of Scotland. The Lagg Inn, with its comfortable accommodation and cozy pub, provides an ideal base for exploring this end of the island.

With a storm moving into the area, we were a bit concerned as to whether the ferry would be running in order to get us off the island. Fortunately, the weather cooperated and we were able to get back to the mainland for our drive back to Edinburgh. After an overnight stay, we caught a flight to the Isle of Lewis and Harris. But that’s a story for another day.
