At the end of August, I revisited Southern Alberta, in particular, Waterton Lakes National Park. The plan was to have two full days of photography. Unfortunately, on the first day it poured rain and, as is frequently the case, it was extremely windy. Trying to find a worthwhile composition in a literal monsoon just didn’t sound like a lot of fun. So while I did spend a little time driving around scouting out locations, no photography happened on Day 1.

The next day was a different story. I started off the day, near Pincher Creek, capturing two ospreys nested on top of an old power pole.

While driving around on some back roads in the area, I came across this Mule Deer and two fawns hiding in the bushes.

In Waterton National Park I revisited a waterfall I have photographed a number of times before. I had a good pair of rubber boots with me this time so was able to wade around in the stream. I spent easily an hour or more trying different locations and compositions and came away with several images I liked. The one below is, I think, perhaps my favorite of all of the shots I have taken of this waterfall over the past couple of years.

I ended the day with this shot of the landmark Prince of Wales Hotel.

While I didn’t come away with as many images as I have on other trips to the area, I still had a very enjoyable visit. Hopefully, next Spring I will once again be in the area.

  1. Beautiful photoset. I always wanted to go to Alberta but live in the U.K. and my wife can’t travel far, so looking at your fantastic photos just make me dream. Thanks for sharing them.

    1. Thank you James. I appreciate your comments. We have enjoyed our trips to the UK. Our visit to Scotland last Fall was like a photographer’s dream.

  2. Scotland is beautiful – I go there a lot. 🙂
